Another 2212/6 2700 Kv motor from Deal Extreme

Hi everyone -

I was poking around some more on the Deal Extreme website and found another 2212/6 2700 Kv motor http://www.dx.com/p/a2212-2700kv-brushless-motor-set-for-r-c-toy-golden-silver-361849#.VJWrwsCA

This one appears to be identical to the Focal Price 2700 Kv motor that is still currently out of stock.  I have ordered one to test it out, I will call it the DX Gold motor as I am already running another DX 2700 Kv motor which is black, so it will be the DX Black http://www.dx.com/p/a2212s-2700kv-outrunner-brushless-motor-45134#.VJWw5sCA to hopefully prevent confusion between the two.

The good news about this recent find if it is the same as the Focal Price, Ebay and DX Black motors, it is much cheaper at $9.71 USD compared to $12.39 for the DX Black, $12.29 for the Focal Price motor (if they ever get them back in stock) , $10.99 for the YUSHOP66 (EBay) 2700 Kv motor.

So if nothing else, if the performance matches up to the specs, it will be another source of what seems to be a very popular size and Kv motor these days, especially within the park jet community.  If you buy 3 of the DX Gold motors, the price drops to $8.61 per motor and shipping is still free (although quite slow, expect 4-6 weeks if you are in North America).

I have put about 50 flights now on my DX Black motor and it is running very smooth and strong, a bit peppier than my other 2212/6 2700 Kv motors drawing on average about 37 amps and producing about 444 watts with a 6x3 EMP prop.

More to follow on this DX Gold motor once it arrives and I get a chance to test it on the bench and at the field.

  1. Hi Scott. I was shopping at DealExtreme for some replacement batteries for my cordless home phones and thought I would throw in one of their 2700kv motors while I was at it. Then I saw the new gold one and was confused, so I came back here to re-read your review - and found this post. Too funny, small world. Anyway I'm going to pick up one of the new gold ones. I've so far only flown the 2628 2200kv so it should be a notable difference. I'll have to pick up some EMP props, I haven't seen any reverse rotation (pusher) EMPs anywhere, do you just use regular rotation props?

      Yes, I just use regular rotation props on my motors. I get my EMP props from RC Timer http://www.rctimer.com/product-218.html , they are definitely the best price I have found, they will also take awhile to get to you as shipping from RC Timer is not fast. You will probably need to supply your own bullet connectors for the motor to connect to your ESC. I would suspect that if this motor is the same as the Focal Price and the Black Deal Extreme motors, it will also need a 40A ESC.

      I have always replaced the prop collet on the Focal Price motors as I found they were not the best quality, so keep an eye on that, I always found that the collet that came with them was tough to get tight enough.       It is very important to balance the EMP props, especially since you are going to be spinning them at very high RPM, they are notoriously out of balance out of the package.

      You will notice a big difference with this motor if it is the same as the Focal Price motor I have used, much quicker acceleration and top speed, it generates about 8 oz more thrust than the D2826 motor and because of the higher Kv and the lower pitch 6x3 EMP prop, they spin up much faster, so lots of pop for aerobatics. I would not run it on anything other than a 6x3 EMP prop otherwise the motor will get too hot.

  2. My new DX motor arrived last week. Interesting that it is notably smaller than the Turnigy D2826, at least by a few mm in each dimension. I'm probably going to put it in a new plane, which I have yet to build... likely either a Su-27 or F-18. I just finished building an FT-Spitfire so my workbench is now cleared up :) If only the weather would do likewise so I could do some flying...

      That is interesting to hear, I just measured one of my DX gold motors and the Turnigy 2826 motor and they are both the same using my micrometer.

      Hopefully they didn't send you a 2208/8 2600 Kv motor by mistake, that would be considerably smaller, the can measurements on that one would be 28mm in diameter (same as the DX 2700 and the Turnigy 2826 motors), but only 22mm in length compared to 26mm for both the DX and Turnigy motors.

      That 2208/8 motor is still very peppy, with a 6x3 EMP prop it produces about the same thrust as the Turnigy motor on a 6x4 APC prop, but if the plane gets too heavy, say above about 19 oz, it doesn't feel like it has the "grunt" to really make your plane move like the DX 2700 motor can.

      Weather has been off and on here, still able to get out 2-3 times a week. Good luck with your Spitfire and your new motor!

  3. Some kind of optical illusion, it's within .25 mm of the exact same size. Even after measuring it with my calipers, I still swear it looks smaller.

    1. Hi Chris, sorry, I measured mine with calipers as well, just cheap plastic ones from the dollar store, so not that accurate. The Turnigy motors do look a little more "beefy" when it gets right down to it. Maybe the manufacturer that mass produces this DX motor which I have also purchased from Focal Price and a vendor on EBay uses slightly thinner material when producing the bell to save money/weight.

      For park jets, this has become my overall favorite motor of all time, for the price and the thrust and acceleration I get from them, it is tough to beat.

      I'm interested to hear how you make out with it in your first plane... :)

  4. So I've finally got my f-18 together, and put this gold dx motor in it. My jet is 620g with 2200 3s, your spreadsheet shows this motor with a 6x3 emp prop to have over a kg of thrust. So I figure if I point it vertical and throttle up it should get pretty light and at full throttle I should be having to hold it down... It seems to barely even feel lighter. The only thing is that the motor bell seems to be able to rock about from side to side, and clicks when it does so. It also sounds a bit rough, particularly at slower speeds... I'm thinking it might have a bad bearing. Have you had any bad ones, out of the box? Is it worth trying to replace the bearings or do I just right it off and order another one from dx, with fingers crossed? I'm using the turnigy plush 40A esc and tried changing the timing but it didn't seem to have much effect... I reset the throttle end points as well just for good measure.

      Sorry to hear of your troubles with this motor. I have not had a bad one out of the box, I have had one that wore out after about 100 flights, probably the bearings. Can you move the bell from side to side by hand, or does it move when you apply power to the motor? At the very top of the bell where the shaft comes out, there is a very tiny grub screw, maybe that has come loose? Is the prop loose at all? The prop collets that come with these motors are not always the best. The only other things to check are the prop facing the right way and being balanced. I have never replaced the bearings on one of these motors, I think a good set of bearings is probably going to cost as much as another motor. Not sure if any of this helped, good luck :)
