As I was shooting the step by step build video on my recent FRC Foamies Su35 MK2 build, I kept thinking maybe I should just do a detailed video discussing more of the materials and components I use in all my builds. If you have already watched the build video, much of it might be a bit of a repeat for you, but I have done a pretty detailed section on props, motors, ESCs and batteries that you might find helpful. In the power system portion I also demonstrate how I like to balance my props and how to set the throttle points on your transmitter to get maximum potential from your setup.
I certainly don't claim to be an expert at anything, but have gained considerable experience over the last two years of building and flying park jets. I also did considerable testing last year on several park jet motors and how different props, ESC settings and batteries effect how the power system performs and how in turn that affects how my planes perform. Much of this is gained through trial and error over the last two years...heavy on the error... :/ So again, not that I am an expert, but hopefully learning from my mistakes it can help you keep from making the same ones.
Some of the stuff is pretty basic and some more advanced, so again I hope that whatever skill level you are at, you might find something of use in this video.
I have set the video up in parts to make it easier to navigate to what you want/need -
- Intro, starts at 0:21;
- Part 1 - Foam and carbon reinforcement, starts at 3:43;
- Part 2 - Basic tools, starts at 19:51;
- Part 3 - Glues and tapes, starts at 33:55;
- Part 4 - Transmitters, receivers, servos and linkages, starts at 49:31;
- Part 5 - Power systems - props, motors, ESCs and batteries, starts at 1:15:29;
- Part 6 - Finishing and paint, starts at 1:58:20;
- Part 7 - Miscellaneous (things that were missed previously in the video), starts at 2:07:32; and
- Part 8 - Flight box goodies and field repair, starts at 2:21:05;
Here is the video
As mentioned several times in the video, here are some links to materials and components that I use. I have tried to arrange the links in the same order as they appear in the video. Unless otherwise mentioned, all Hobby King links are to the international warehouse. Where I have listed the same item but from different vendors, I have included the price to help with comparative shopping depending on your budget. As mentioned in the video, shipping from RC Timer, Focal Price and Deal Extreme is free, but can take several weeks to get to you depending on where you live.

Glue and tape
Most of the glues and tapes I showed in the video are available at local retailers for me, but I do have to order the Foam Tac online. Not all distributors will ship it to me here in Canada, but I have found some that will do it without problems if they ship via ground.

I was not able to find the link on ebay where I purchased my rare earth magnets for holding down my hatch, but this is the size that I use for example http://www.ebay.com/itm/50x-Neodymium-Disc-1-4-X-1-16-Super-Strong-Rare-Earth-Magnet-N35-D6x1-5mm-/181556354334?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a459a1d1e
I hope that I have covered everything that is available online from the video, if I have missed anything, please let me know and I will post it.
I hope the video and all these links might be helpful to you... :) Good luck in your Park Jet workshop!

Hi Scott,
ReplyDeleteAs I watch through these video's you've put together of the build and your work space and what it is that you do, it’s truly an outstanding effort on your part. I really enjoy being a part of it and for the few minutes I’m able to watch along, its like the audience is right there with you. There’s really nothing I could say here in this comment section that would do it all justice in an effort to thank you for all the hard work.
I decided to take some screenshots of a sunny day at the field from one of your video’s in an effort to pay it back a little and hopefully make you smile. I captured one frame where the Mig 29 V4 was going by low and fast and you could see the shadow on the ground that looked really cool but the plane was a little blurry( I wonder why?…lol ). So I borrowed a view from another frame, and after a little bit of editing came up with something I wanted to show you. I’ll attach the original, the borrowed plane, my final edit, and one from the build below video.
talk to you soon,

Hi RT -
DeleteWow, thanks so much for going to the effort of capturing those pictures of my Mig, awesome... :)
I am glad the videos are enjoyable and of use, I'm always worried folks will find my constant droning on kinda boring, but I hope that the content is what really helps folks out. It is feedback like yours that motivates me to keep doing them to try and give back to this hobby that I enjoy so much.
I am going to do a video next primarily aimed at beginners discussing the Turnigy D2826/6 2200 Kv motor from HK that will hopefully answer many of the questions that I used to see on the RC Powers site regarding the motor, prop, ESC, battery combination as that seems to be a big source of confusion. I know it was for me when I first got started and until I started really trying to educate myself and test motors, props, ESCs and batteries to see numbers for myself, much of it was a mystery. I am still not what I would consider an expert, but hopefully through my experience and lessons learned it might help others out.
Thanks as always for your kind words and support, flying weather still not good here, so doing lots of indoor stuff like building and shooting video to keep myself occupied.
Any progress on your Mig build?
Thanks again... :)
Cheers,
Scott

ReplyDelete"Hello my name is RT and I'm the world's slowest builder"
( pitiful update below)
So far while waiting for 2 deliveries from China I've received one from HeadsUp RC ie: Servo's, Mixer, Y-harness's, and Micro Push Rod system for flexible rudder linkage (1-servo possibly even though I bought 6). I have the foam and carbon already but haven't cut any as of yet. On the plan's I've made the modification to the tail plate and horizontal stab to make it more V4 like, as well as the aileron's. I've also retro-fitted an FRC SU35 tail to the RCP plan and only had to change one angle slightly where it meets the tailplate.
I guess for now i'll have to continue this limited RC existence living vicariously through your video's, as well as other on line forum's. The hard stuff is already done its just a matter of getting off my butt and getting started... lol
talk to you soon,
RT
Hi RT -
DeleteI understand, I get on "build binges" once in awhile where I build a couple airplanes back to back and then take a break. All depends on my motivation. Now that I have done a lot of testing on three different Mig29 V4 variants and two Su35 MK2 variants, I will build the F15 MK2 for a change of pace although I will use many of the modifications that have worked so well on the Migs and Sus.
Sometimes I can't get a plane build fast enough to test out a new setup and then other times I just need a bit of a break to recharge the creative batteries.
Sounds like you have the first bit of fussy work done modifying the plans, I'm excited to see what you think of your modified Mig29 V3.
I'm shooting another beginner video today on the D2826/6 motor, then not sure what I might do next, probably a walkaround on the F15 once I get that done.
Cheers,
Scott
